Freya

Freya is one of the Sisters, and lives at the Sisters' farm.¹ She calls Hazel her sister.¹ Her magic is healing and protection.¹

Description

Appearance

A human woman a few years older than Hazel, about five foot nine, stocky and broad-shouldered, with dark skin, dark hair and bright green eyes.¹ She wears simple wool working clothes, and her hair is tied in a practical braid with wildflowers stuck through it.¹

Personality

Freya is warm with strangers. She smiled at the party when they came into the kitchen, which stood out that evening: Hecate did not smile at all, and Circe’s one smile was more unsettling than her not smiling.¹ She told the party to help themselves to the stew and pointed out where the bowls and the silverware were.¹

Freya calls Hazel her sister and will not explain it any further than that. Asked about the lack of any resemblance between them, she said she would not call it adoption, that she could not explain it to someone who had not lived it, and that she thinks very fondly of Hazel even though Hazel is aloof.¹

Freya’s cooking is serviceable rather than good. She learned it from people who did not much care what food tastes like.¹

Biography

Session 6

Freya was cooking stew in the farmhouse kitchen when Hazel brought the party in on the evening of 27 Coldrise, 1714 PSF. She told them they were expected, Calypso having sent word ahead, and that Hecate was in the backyard going over the ritual. She asked Hazel to introduce her companions so that nobody at the farm mistook them for outsiders.¹

She fed Temerity and Anthusa Toguri at the kitchen table and settled Anthusa into a room in the house.¹ Introducing herself to Temerity as Hazel’s sister, and finding Temerity puzzled by the lack of any resemblance, she said she would not call it adoption and that she could not explain it to someone who had not lived it. She said she thinks very fondly of Hazel even though Hazel is aloof.¹

Hecate named her as the third sister for the warding ritual, saying she had been guided in that particular protection and had always had a gift for that kind of magic.¹ At the Standing Stone she walked a circuit burning a bundle, and warned the party not to breathe the smoke.¹ After the fight she healed what Hecate’s spell had not, then touched a tree and grew ten goodberries out of it, which she gave to Temerity. She said they carried the full nourishment of the forest, and that they would not undo a wound but would keep someone bleeding out alive.¹

Session 7

Freya held the ritual at the Standing Stone with Hecate and Circe while the party hunted the Sorrowsworn, and was there when it completed.² She turned into a sparrow and followed Hecate back to the farm.² Hazel cited her to Hecate as someone who would not ask for anything in return for her part in the ritual.²

Session 8

Freya was making breakfast with Anthusa Toguri on the morning the party left, in a brighter mood even than usual, and had already told Anthusa about the ritual.³ Asked by Iva for a bread recipe, she looked at her, said sure, and wrote one out with a quill that appeared in her hand without her reaching for it.³ She gave Hazel enough reagents for two healing potions and told her to eat breakfast before she went.³
