The Hat of Witchery is a witch’s hat made by Hecate for Luma.1 It is a hat of wizardry reworked for a witch.23

Description

Appearance

A very large, wide-brimmed hat in a midnight blue that is almost black, with a strap around the base of the crown fastened by a small silver buckle and a white raven feather tucked through it. Crescent moons and eyes are picked out across it in a slightly lighter blue.1 The inside fits the wearer’s head while the outside stays enormous.1

Properties

The hat is laced with a subtle magic that reminds its wearer of the Sisters' farm and the people who live there.1 Luma keeps her bag of holding stuffed inside its crown.1 Written inside the hat in Hecate’s hand are the words “always fits perfectly”.4

Mechanics

Wondrous Item, Common (Requires Attunement by a Spellcaster)

This wide brimmed, cone-shaped hat is adorned with moons and stars. While you are wearing it, you gain the following benefits.

Spellcasting Focus. You can use the hat as a Spellcasting Focus for your spells.

Unknown Spell. As a Magic action, you can try to cast a cantrip that you don’t know. The cantrip must be on the Druid or Warlock spell list and have a casting time of an action, and you make a DC 10 Intelligence (Arcana) check. On a successful check, you cast the spell. On a failed check, the spell fails, and the action used to cast the spell is wasted. In either case, you can’t use this property again until you finish a Long Rest.

Effortless Magic. While this item requires attunement, it does not count against the number of magic items you can attune to.1

History

Session 7

Luma asked Hecate whether witches still wear big hats. Hecate said she does not, and offered to make Luma a hat or a walking stick as payment for the night’s work. Luma thought it over and asked for a really big hat.2

Session 8

Hecate gave it to Luma in the barn the next morning. “I’ve worked for you this hat as you requested. A little parting gift for all of your help.”1 Luma took it without a word and put it straight on, then identified it and attuned to it over breakfast.1

Session 9

Hazel rode across the bridge into the Lantern Wards inside the hat on 30 Coldrise, 1714 PSF, in the form of a rabbit, and read Hecate’s words written inside it.4

Session 13

Spellcasters are uncommon in Argentum, since they are arrested, and witches are rarer still. The Sisters, the only people anyone would call witches, do not wear big pointed hats, and the hat has drawn odd looks and nothing more.5
