Lathiel

Lathiel was a mentor and friend to Rhysaene in Argentum, an artist and a kind of arts patron.¹² She is dead.³

Biography

Session 4

Rhysaene told the others that her magic is not really her own: a close friend who died left her a piece of who she was.³

Session 6

At the Sisters' farm on 27 Coldrise, 1714 PSF, Circe looked at a drawing of Rhysaene’s and said she did lovely work. She had put in a request to have her portrait painted by a talented artist living in the city, who had not been able to do it, and Rhysaene’s style reminded her of that artist’s.¹ Asked the artist’s name, Circe said, “She went by the name Lathiel, but I think you knew that already.”¹ When Rhysaene put a hand to her heart, Circe said she understood now, and gripped whatever she had in her pocket. Rhysaene said Lathiel had been a mentor and a friend.¹ Circe said they would talk more at a better time, and that she would seek Rhysaene out in the city.¹

Session 14

A woman calling herself Daisy, a courier, came to Rhysaene’s apartment on the night of 1 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF, and said Lathiel had sent her to pick up a ledger.⁴ Rhysaene had not heard of Lathiel doing any business dealings lately.⁴

Session 15

Rhysaene told the party that Lathiel was a friend she got in with when she came to the city, a kind of arts patron with her toes in everything.² She made it her business to know other people’s business, and she had secrets, which she kept even from Rhysaene.² She told Rhysaene that House Sterling was dirty.² Rhysaene remembered her mentioning a ledger only once, and thought the one Daisy wanted was something of Lathiel’s.² Hidden compartments in Rhysaene's apartment date from when Lathiel was alive.²

Session 16

Rhysaene tried to reach, through her memories and dreams, toward wherever Lathiel might have kept a ledger.⁵ On the night of 6 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF, she dreamed of a beating heart that led her to a stage and, behind the props backstage, to a loose floorboard, where she held a leather-bound book with a latch and put it away under the boards.⁵
