Dalric Ironmark is the master coiner of Argentum, and technically a senior Vaultsmith. He mints, or oversees the minting of, all of the city’s currency, and works in the minting vaults beneath the Hall of the Anvil.1
Description
Appearance
An older dwarf, probably in his hundreds, with dark hair and a traditional dwarven beard, and unremarkable to look at.1 Every time the party has met him he has smelled of whiskey.1 He carries a leather-wrapped silver flask, and keeps a case of coins in a pocket of his coat.21
Personality
Dalric drinks on the job, and at the Hall of the Anvil it is no secret.1 He is short with anyone in his way. In the Valve Halls he threatened a clerk’s job over a shortage of machine oil, and he calls the elves he meets stupid or idiots to their faces.321 He does not like to admit a mistake: he denied ever meeting Hazel, and when she brought up what he had said at the Festival of Bells, he put it down to drink and asked her to forget it.21
Dalric panics when he is in trouble, and then weighs his own interest. He told Luma and Hazel that his smartest move would be to turn them in, and said so only so that his next words would carry weight: keep him out of it.1 He had never been implicated in high crimes and treason before, he said.1
Biography
Session 1
At the Festival of Bells on 24 Coldrise, 1714 PSF, a heavily drunk old dwarf at a drinks tent showed Hazel a coin he said was seventeen hundred years old, and asked whether she believed it. When she said she did, he said, “Stupid elf, what do you know?” and walked off.3
Session 9
In the Valve Halls under the Hall of the Anvil on 30 Coldrise, 1714 PSF, he was berating a young clerk to have two barrels of grade two machine oil sent to the minting vaults.2 Hazel recognized him and said hello. “No, we’ve never met. I don’t remember you.”2 He had not heard that any old vaults were being unsealed, and complained that nobody told him anything anymore.2
Session 12
Among the offerings in a dwarven shrine in the sealed Underforge Vaults, Hazel saw a silver coin like the one he had shown her, and wanted to find him to ask about the history of the city.4
Session 13
Hazel resolved to find the dwarf again, apologize, and talk to him.5
Session 14
At the Hall of the Anvil on 1 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF, Luma described him to the receptionist, who named him as the master coiner, Dalric Ironmark.1 Luma left him a note asking him to meet her for a drink, with a drawing of a double crescent moon coin that only he could see.1
He met Luma and Hazel at the Dancing Sword that evening.1 When Hazel asked what the name Fardrimm meant to him and Luma showed him her work order, he told them no one had authorized it. He warned that someone would lose their job, or worse.1 He told them to rent a room and waited downstairs with Sage, talking himself out of leaving three times, then joined them in room 204.1
There he explained that the Structural Integrity Department had lost its head in a shake-up about a week before, and that only a Vaultsmith high in his organization could have sent the order through. He advised Luma to stick to her report.1 He admitted that the old silver coins he carries are probably about 350 years old, not 1,700, and that the minting vaults melt down old coins, relics and artifacts for their metal.1 He asked them to keep his name out of it. When the rest of the party knocked on the door, he panicked, and then agreed to Luma’s story: he was the wrong dwarf, and they had never met.1
