The Vaultsmiths are the guild that works the Underforge Vaults beneath Argentum. Their guildhall is the Hall of the Anvil in the Lantern Wards.1 They mint the city’s coinage.2
Activities
In the Valve Halls under the city, Vaultsmiths check pressures and reroute lines, working alongside members of the Guild of Sparks.1 Part of the vaults is given over to minting.1 Masks against bad air cannot be bought, but the Vaultsmiths would have them for their work.1
Organization
As far as Luma knows, the Vaultsmiths are an order much younger than the Starfall.3 The guild has a Structural Integrity Division, and senior Vaultsmiths among its ranks.1 There are several senior Vaultsmiths, and the master coiner, Dalric Ironmark, is technically one of them. He mints, or oversees the minting of, all of Argentum’s currency.2 Armed Vaultsmiths in light armor guard the stairwell from the Hall of the Anvil down to the Valve Halls.1
Regalia
The Vaultsmiths’ emblem is an anvil with the mote of flame that the Synod of the Silver Flame uses as its own emblem floating above it. It is carved on the front of the Hall of the Anvil, pressed into the seals of the guild’s documents and struck on every copper anvil, and many members wear it on a medallion.1 The flame was made to match the emblem of the faith of the Silver Flame.3 Dwarven armor in the sealed vaults bears an older emblem much like it, but with the flame rising from the anvil itself, and a flame unlike the church’s.3
History
Session 1
Investigator Mave Dul brought two Vaultsmiths to the scene of the Everfire Lamp eruption. They took Luma’s maintenance hatch key and her maps for the investigation, to be returned later.4
Session 9
A senior Vaultsmith requested a survey of two sections of the sealed vaults and asked for Luma by name, warning of unusual danger, since the Vaultsmiths had not been inside those vaults in five hundred years.1 The next day the party entered through the Hall of the Anvil. In the Valve Halls they passed an old dwarf demanding machine oil for the minting vaults, who had not heard that any vaults were being unsealed.1
Session 10
In the sealed vaults, Luma found the older emblem on rusted dwarven armor and copied it into her own notes, leaving it out of the survey report she owed the Vaultsmiths.3
Session 11
Luma found that her work order, number 1247, had come from the Structural Integrity Division.5 It sent the party into Vaults 17 to 19 beneath the Silver Archives on the Vigil of Remembrance, 1714 PSF. It said those areas were sealed about five hundred years ago, which Luma could not square with what she found there.5
Session 12
The older emblem, with the flame rising from the anvil, is carved on the back wall of a dwarven shrine in the vaults below Vault 18.6
Session 14
On 1 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF, Dalric Ironmark told Luma that no one had authorized her work order, and that the Vaultsmiths would be the ones in trouble for it.2 The Structural Integrity Department had lost its head in a shake-up about a week earlier, and the order had slipped through that crack, technically authorized by someone who no longer worked there.2 Only a Vaultsmith high in the organization, he said, could have known of the shake-up and sent the order through all the proper channels.2
Session 16
By 3 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF, a broad investigation at the Vaultsmiths’ guildhall was trying to learn who had issued Luma’s work order.7 It was Amber Deepdraft, a senior Vaultsmith, who had left her name off it. She had not known how closely certain forces in the Vaultsmiths read reports.7 As far as she knew, the investigators believed someone at the Vaultsmiths was compromised.7
