Kessa is scatterbrained. When Luma came in on the evening of 29 Coldrise, 1714 PSF, Kessa was hunting down her notebooks to go home, told Luma she looked forward to seeing her the next day, and only then remembered that Luma had an assignment waiting.¹

Kessa does not count herself important. She offered to ask around at the Silver Archives on Luma’s behalf, and made sure Luma understood that she could promise nothing.¹

Biography

Session 9

Kessa gave Luma a formal work order from the Vaultsmiths, which had come in that morning and asked for Luma by name: a survey of two sections of the sealed vaults beneath the city.¹ She gave Luma two vault keys, to be returned afterward, fifty crowns for her pay and supplies, and twenty platinum dragons to hire security.¹ The first section, she explained, is reached through the Hall of the Anvil. The second is entered from the basement of the Silver Archives, and she needed a day or two to arrange clearance for it.¹ It was the first time the Bureau had been given work involving the sealed vaults.¹

Luma asked her about Rurik Hulduro. Kessa knew his book but not the man, and believed he works through the Silver Archives but technically for the Synod of the Silver Flame.¹ Then she went home to feed her cat.¹

Session 11

Surveyor Tumblebrim spoke to the librarian at the Silver Archives about Luma on the afternoon of 30 Coldrise, 1714 PSF, ahead of Luma’s survey of the vaults beneath the Archives.³

Session 14

Kessa does not usually come in until seven, and Luma was already at work when she arrived on 1 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF. Kessa learned early to give Luma her own key, since when Luma works outside the building and runs out of paper, her notes spill onto its face.² She asked whether the survey was finished, and told Luma to hand in the report once it was final, so that she could review it and pass it to the Vaultsmiths.² That evening Luma told Dalric Ironmark that Kessa had authorized the work order, on behalf of the senior Vaultsmith of the Structural Integrity Division. Dalric knew her name, said she had been good for the Bureau, and thought she would skate by if she had followed orders.²

Session 15

When Luma came in for an hour on 2 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF, Kessa gave no sign that anything was wrong.⁴

Session 16

On 3 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF, after Vaestra Wenn and Thaddeus Marwin came to the Bureau on behalf of the church, Kessa had to fire Luma, and cried as she told her.⁵ She had told them Luma was her best employee, that the order looked official, and that she had approved it and would take responsibility, but if she held her ground they would fire them both. She believed someone very high up was pushing for it.⁵ The investigators had asked her ten different ways who issued the work order, and she did not know.⁵ She gave Luma fifty crowns in back pay and severance, her home address in case Luma ever needed a reference, and a promise to keep looking into it.⁵
